Senior Camp
Session Dates
June 30 – August 5, 2012
The senior camp is five weeks long, lasting through July and into the first week of August, and accepts students aged 13–18. Applicants should have had prior chamber music and orchestral experience. The fee per student for the five-week session is $5,700 in 2012 and is all-inclusive.
Scholarship assistance is available. Greenwood makes every effort to ensure that any accepted camper can attend Greenwood irrespective of financial need.
Admission is by live audition whenever possible. Applicants should prepare two contrasting pieces or movements of the same piece. Please choose pieces which you know well, and which you and your teacher agree represent you accurately. There will be sight-reading for string and wind players.
Auditions take place in late February and early March in Boston, New York and Western Massachusetts. When distance precludes a live audition, a recorded audition on CD, video tape, or DVD is acceptable, and must be received by March 1. Here is a fillable application in PDF format.
Audition Dates
Western Massachusetts: Sunday, February 19, 2012, The Northampton Community Music Center, 139 South St., Northampton, MA
Boston, MA: Saturday, February 25, 2012, New England Conservatory
New York, NY: Saturday, March 3, 2012, Manhattan School of Music
Prospective auditioners must contact Deborah Sherr before the audition dates. Taped auditions, preferably in CD or video format, must arrive by March 1st. Here is a fillable application in PDF format.
Concerts
There are concerts every Saturday night at 7:30 at which every student performs in chamber music, orchestra and chorus. Families and friends are always welcome at concerts.
Music
Every student receives a chamber music assignment on Monday morning, has a minimum of three coached rehearsal sessions as well as rehearsals without a coach, and performs that piece on the following Saturday. In any given summer over 60 movements of major works will be learned and performed for the entire community. See the Final Concert program for samples of repertoire.
The orchestra works all summer on a complete program to be performed in the Final Concerts, with individual movements played on Saturday nights. The chorus learns one or two short pieces for each Saturday concert, and prepares a major work for the final concert.
Every student has a private lesson every week, and can always seek out extra help from the faculty.
Recreation
There are many possible forms of recreation at Greenwood. There are two clay tennis courts, a pool, ping-pong tables, miles of dirt roads and trails for biking and hiking, and a field for the soccer, softball or frisbee games that often fill a beautiful summer evening.
We also enjoy a camp-wide treasure hunt, charades and Capture-the-Flag games every summer.
