Junior Camp

Session dates: Saturday, August 15, 2020 to Sunday, August 30, 2020

Junior Greenwood takes place over two weeks at the end of August and accepts string, wind, and piano students aged 10–13. This year's tuition is $3,400 is all-inclusive and includes a videotape of the final weekend concert. All tuition payments are non-refundable. .

Music

Each day at camp, students participate in orchestra, play in chamber music ensembles, and sing. Every morning starts with an orchestra rehearsal and our orchestra performs at the beginning of each concert. On Monday each week, students are assigned a chamber group and a movement from the chamber music literature. Every morning, the group meets with a coach in preparation for the weekend concert. Individual lessons are scheduled with faculty members as often as the students and coaches think necessary to prepare the music for performance. In the afternoons, the whole camp gathers for “Sing.” A shared repertoire of folk songs, rounds, and composed pieces prompts campers to sing together on their way to rehearsals, during work crew, and sitting around the pool. Singing is an important part of our environment and is featured in both of our formal concerts.

There are two concerts during the session; one on Saturday at the end of week one, and the final concert on the last Sunday of camp. For a sampling of repertoire played, see 2019 concert 1 repertoire (not in concert order) and final concert program.

Scholarships

Every year between 30 and 40 percent of enrolled campers are awarded some amount of scholarship aid.  We pride ourselves on our need blind acceptance policy, and our demonstrated commitment to providing financial support whenever assistance is appropriate.

Recreation

In addition to music, Junior Greenwood is filled with fun activities! Games and activities are organized and supervised by the counselors. They include games of soccer, “crackabout,” (Greenwood’s form of dodge ball), capture the flag, a scavenger hunt, a treasure hunt, charades, and a talent show. On the middle Sunday, we take a day trip to hike up Mount Greylock or some of us visit art museums in the area. The last Thursday of Junior Greenwood is the night of our contra-dance, complete with a live band! On the last Friday evening, we visit the Cummington Fair where the campers enjoy rides, carnival games, and delicious fair treats. During students’ free time each day there are opportunities to swim in our large pool, play ping-pong, or simply to sit and talk with friends.
