About

Greenwood Music Camp is a summer camp for classical musicians. The camp offers a life which combines the profound sharing and communication of the chamber music experience with a supportive family-like daily life.

The camp maintains a balance of string, woodwind and piano players. All students participate in chamber music, orchestra and chorus, and are challenged and encouraged to work hard to discover the great reward of intensive, well-focused learning.

Generations of Greenwooders have agreed that the extraordinarily high level of music making, combined with the warm, non-competitive atmosphere which Greenwood promotes, is unique.

Junior Camp takes place over two weeks at the end of August and accepts string, wind, and piano students aged 10–13. Junior Camp enrolls 55-60 campers, many of whom return from the previous year, no re-audition required. Greenwood does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation or national origin.

Music

Each day at camp, students participate in orchestra, play in chamber music ensembles, and sing. Every morning starts with an orchestra rehearsal and our orchestra performs at the beginning of each concert. On Monday each week, students are assigned a chamber group and a movement from the chamber music literature. Every morning, the group meets with a coach in preparation for the weekend concert. Individual lessons are scheduled with faculty members as often as the students and coaches think necessary to prepare the music for performance. In the afternoons, the whole camp gathers for “Sing.” A shared repertoire of folk songs, rounds, and composed pieces prompts campers to sing together on their way to rehearsals, during work crew, and sitting around the pool. Singing is an important part of our environment and is featured in both of our formal concerts.

There are two concerts during the session; one on Saturday at the end of week one, and the final concert on the last Sunday of camp. For a sampling of repertoire played, see last year’s final concert program.

On the middle Sunday, we take a day trip to hike up Mount Greylock or some of us visit art museums in the area. The last Thursday of Junior Greenwood is the night of our contra-dance, complete with a live band! On the last Friday evening, we visit the Cummington Fair where the campers enjoy rides, carnival games, and delicious fair treats. During students’ free time each day there are opportunities to swim in our large pool, play ping-pong, or simply to sit and talk with friends.

Applications will open November 1, 2024 and Audition information posted in December.
